Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Optional Toppings:

  • Shredded cheese
  • Chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Make the Meatballs:

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into small meatballs and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
    • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and browned.
  3. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

    • While the meatballs are baking, boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, salt, and black pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.
  4. Make the Gravy:

    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until smooth.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly, until the gravy is thickened and smooth. Season with salt and black pepper.
  5. Assemble the Bake:

    • Spread the mashed potatoes evenly in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Arrange the meatballs on top of the mashed potatoes.
    • Pour the gravy over the meatballs and mashed potatoes.
    • Top with shredded cheese and chopped green onions, if desired.
  6. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  7. Serve: Let the bake cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Whenever possible, use fresh vegetables and herbs for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the Seasoning: Taste the meatball mixture, mashed potatoes, and gravy as you go and adjust the seasoning as needed. You might want to add more salt, pepper, or other spices to suit your taste.
  • Thicken the Gravy: If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water) before serving.
  • Freeze Leftovers: This bake freezes beautifully. Just let it cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.
