Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup milk, room temperature
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Maple Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp maple extract (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the yeast, warm water, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the sugar, milk, melted butter, eggs, salt, and vanilla extract. Add the yeast mixture and stir until combined. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape the Donuts: Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or a glass to cut out donut shapes.
- Second Rise: Place the donuts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Fry the Donuts: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- Make the Glaze: While the donuts are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and maple extract (if using) until smooth.
- Glaze the Donuts: Dip the cooled donuts into the maple glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place on a wire rack to set.
- Serve: Enjoy your Maple Bar Donuts immediately or store them in an airtight container for later.
Notes
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Whenever possible, use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.
- Check the Temperature: Use a thermometer to ensure your oil is at the correct temperature for frying. Too hot, and the donuts will burn; too cold, and they’ll absorb too much oil.
- Adjust the Glaze: If your glaze is too thick, add a bit more milk. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.
- Freeze Leftovers: These donuts freeze beautifully. Just letA them cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months.
